Celebrating The Fourth Of July Physical Distancing Style
Celebrating the Fourth of July is going to look a little different this year. There are still plenty of ways to make this Fourth of July memorable with loved ones.
There are three important components of a great Fourth of July celebration: food, games, and fireworks. Here’s a few ways to celebrate the upcoming holiday safely and creatively.
Food
The annual Fourth of July Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is taking place and will be televised! Consider creating a family tradition for celebrating the Fourth. Having a hot dog eating contest at home gives the family something to look forward to in lieu of attending a street festival or parade, and it’s fun for the whole family. To entertain other loved ones who are unable to be in attendance, post a Facebook or Instagram live! It’s sure to be a hit with whoever chooses to view it.
Games
Since conventional games are going to be difficult this year it might be time to try out some newer games. Traditional board games like Monopoly®, Sorry®, and many others are available on digital devices. Have everyone create an account and sit 6’ apart. This would allow for a family board game night without coming within 6’ of others. Other digital party games are also available like the Jack-Box® party game. Trying to plan a game night without spending money; games like darts, charades, speed solitary, mafia, trivia, name that tune, and more can be creatively reworked to be done in a virtual setting. One more creative idea is to set up a game of Battleship® via Zoom.
Celebrating this Fourth of July is a great time to flashback to your childhood. Since we will be at home, stop at a local store to grab a slip n slide or a double dutch jump rope. For those who have younger kids to entertain, start the fun early with some morning Fourth of July crafts. Once the artwork is finished, hang it up in the windows to brighten up the neighborhood. This is a great way to keep kids entertained while also putting a smile on other people’s faces.
Fireworks
Since fireworks may be a bit tricky to view live this year, substitute a firework show for a firework shaped piñata and let the kids (and adults!) have at it. Although a firework shaped piñata is a fun and creative substitute, many people will miss a true fireworks show. However, some cities are planning to televise previously recorded firework shows. You can tune in to view firework shows from Boston or Nashville. Turn off all of the lights, put some blankets on the floor, and pretend you’re really out there. You may find yourself enjoying the intimate and private show with your loved ones.
